Matt Cutts of Google recently released a video on the Google Mobile App which uses voice recognition to return Google search results. The application is available for iPhone, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, Nokia S60 and Android phones. The voice recognition system appears to work very well for Matt in the video below. Most voice recognition systems have been frustrating to say the least. I know I have had my fair share of frustration with the 1-800-GOOG-411 phone system.
Google Mobile App
The Google Mobile App allows you to get Google search results on your phone including web, images, video, blog, news, books, and maps results. The application gives you a quick access button so you do not have to go through your browser.
Voice Recognition
Voice recognition is the ability to put spoken words to machine-readable formats. Voice recognition has been around for years but no one system has ever caught on. Speech recognition dates back to 1952 but we are just now perfecting the technology to be useful to the masses. Systems of voice recognition that are tailored to understand a specific human voice have worked well for desktop applications, military, and people with disabilities for years. This process eliminates some of the confusion regarding all the different accents, tones, and pitches of voice that humans possess.
Hopefully the Google Mobile App will be a step in the right direction for users that can benefit from speech recognition without all of the headaches we have endured during it’s evolution. Are the days of cursing the automated voice that says “We think you said…” finally coming to an end?
